Large petalled, acid-yellow flowers held over prostrate stems of narrow silver foliage make for a pleasant combination. Sun, but not too parched.

   DEINANTHE                                                                                Hydrangeaceae

dn_deinanthe Deinanthe bifida         9cm...£6.50

Relatively strong-growing species forming steadily increasing clumps of serrate-edged leaves and stunningl pretty pure white flowers with the usual intricate central boss of extra petals and stamens. Part-shade in a moisture-retentive soil with added bark and grit is ideal.

dn_caerulea Deinanthe caerulea          9cm...£6.50

Stunning round violet-blue flowers are held on gently nodding stems in late Spring/early Summer. Truly a beautiful species that outdoes its better know cousin, the Hydrangea, by some distance. Shade and moisture retentive soil suit it best.

Deinanthe bifida x caerulea 'Pale Blue'          1ltr...£6.50

A form now declared to be a hybrid of the two distinct species. Similar to D.bifida but perhaps slightly more vigorous and with the palest blue flowers.

 Dionysia 'Aisbett'          sold out

Dionysia 'Annielle'          7cm...£4.00

A relatively easily pleased and long-lived selection; making a dense, compact cushion of small, mid-green rosettes and with the potential to cover itself in luscious, two-tone yellow flowers in early Spring. This is one of the few Dionysias I've tried outside on a sunny rock garden - grew well and looked great for seven months until end of October ! No doubt, given efficient protection when necessary, this is a distinct possibility.

tn_bevere.jpg Dionysia aretioides 'Bevere'        7cm...£3.50

Dionysia aretioides 'Mary Randall'          sold out

An old variety with large, pale yellow flowers over a loose cushion. Not too difficult in a cold greenhouse and kept airy and dry in the Winter months.

Very compact growth with compact rosettes of slightly scented, crenulate silver-blue-green foliage and good-sized two-tone yellow flowers that sit almost stemless entirely covering the mound.

Dionysia aretioides 'Susan Hale'          sold out

Another selection, this time with large, deeper yellow flowers and with a slightly more robust constitution; though still requiring careful watering and adequate air-flow to maintain good health.

Dionysia aretioides x archibaldii          7cm...£5.00

( D. 'Annielle' x D. archbaldii ) Compact mound of silver-green rosettes and numerous small, palest lilac, golden-eyed flowers.

dn_drimys Drimys henryi          sold out

dn_dudleya Dudleya collomae           1ltr...£2.50

( North America ) This has proved to be remarkably hardy. Forms smooth, glaucous blue, succulent leaves in compact rosettes and from these appear many red stems of yellow-orange flowers. From the region including the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in Arizona. Looks great 'toasted' in a sunny greenhouse in a gritty, sandy compost.
