    ERIOGONUM                                                                          Polygonaceae
en_eriog Eriogonum caespitosum          7cm ... £2.75

Forms congested mats of small, silver grey-blue foliage ( can reach a substantial size in time ) and short stems of yellow, red-tinged pompons are freely produced. Fine in a pot and/or a sunny raised bed or trough.

I also have small plants from a collection by Ron Ratko in the Steens Mountains, Orlando which he describes as "the tightest form of this species I have seen..." Tiny silver-blue leaves in tight congested cushions and "stemless" yellow balls of flower.

Eriogonum douglasii            7cm ... £3.50

Tight, white-felted mounds of small leaves and short-stemmed red buds opening to creamy-yellow pom-pons. A distinct collection by Ron Ratko from the exposed ridge-tops of the Siskiyou Mountains in Orlando.

Eriogonum heracleioides var. heracleioides         7cm ... £2.50

In many ways similar to E. flavum which it grows alongside in the Blue Mountains; forming mounds of pale green leaves, white-felted beneath and large umbels of creamy white flowers. Tough and adaptable.

en_kennedyi Eriogonum kennedyi var. alpigenum          9cm ... £3.50

Densely congested mounds of tiny, narrow elliptical felted leaves and short stems of copper-red, round heads of flower. An excellent species for sunny trough or pot.

en_ovalifolium Eriogonum ovalifolium           7cm ... £3.00

Slow-growing, tight mounds of silver-white felted, oval leaves make a very attractive cushion for the short stems of creamy-yellow heads of flower which quickly fade to a coppery-red creating a curious combination.

saxatile.JPG Eriogonum saxatile          sold out

Unkindly likened to a 'brussel sprout plant' by some ( Mr Nicholls of Timsbury ), these are grown from seed from a highly white-felted population in the San Gabriel Mountains. Small, upright mound-forming and with translucent yellow flowers opening from dark pink buds.

Eriogonum umbellatum var. minor           7cm ... £2.75

The smallest growing form of E. umbellatum with silvery hairy, dark green leaves and russet-red buds opening to yellow flowers which then age to deep maroon-red, creating a startling combination.

Eriogonum umbellatum var. hausknechtii          9cm ... £2.50

This is a particularly attractive form, making very dense mats of dark olive-green leaves with heavily white-felted undersides. As the leaves age they take on red and maroon taints which adds to the contrast with the bright yellow inflorescences on short stems. A grand plant for hot, dry conditions though flowering is enhanced by plentiful water in Spring.

Eriogonum umbellatum var. polyanthum          9cm ... £2.25

Thick-textured foliage with a coppery-blue tinge contrast pleasantly with the yellowish green heads of flower which then quickly age to some startling bright and deep reds.

en_umb Eriogonum umbellatum var. torreyanum           9cm ... £2.50

A very different form with quite large individual leaflets in blue-grey; white-silver hairs give a felted feel and the picture is completed by very large round umbels made up of numerous small, pale yellow flowers which turn rusty-orange with age. A warm, sunny position suits it fine.
