WELCOME TO AD HOC PLANTS

HABERLEA Gesneriaceae
Haberlea rhodopensis 1ltr... £3.00
Ideal for a cool north-facing crevice where the deep green, puckered leaves will slowly form a mound of rosettes and short arching stems carrying umbels of lavender-lilac and white.
Habranthus tubispathus 9cm ... £2.50
From South America and probably best in a cold greenhouse ( or windowsill ) where every summer emerge the pale grey-green leaves and the charming tubular copper-orange flowers. Very pleasant and easy.
HACQUETIA epipactis 1 ltr ... £3.00
A subtle harbinger of Spring: bright green buds and leaves break the surface in March and quickly open to reveal golden flowers at ground level. Appreciates a good soil in a cool and shady location.
Hacquetia epipactis 'Thor' 1 ltr ... £8.50
Not so subtle in that every part of the plant, including flowers, is variegated white and green. May sound slightly off-putting but is, in actual fact, really quite stunning. Can only be propagated by division and is quite slow-growing anyway, so it is never going to be common
Haemanthus albiflos 1ltr...£6.50
Halimiocistus sahucii 2 ltr ... £3.00
( H.umbellatum x H.salviifolius ) A dwarf, low-growing shrub with a slender twiggy framework, narrow dark green leaves and numerous, pure white, saucer-shaped flowers all Summer.

A delicate, twiggy grey-leaved small shrub with hundreds of rich yellow saucers with central brown markings, all Summer.

HELONIOPSIS Melanthiaceae
Heloniopsis orientalis 1ltr...£5.50
Heloniopsis umbellata 9cm ... £4.00
A delightful small clump-forming woodlander from Japan. Narrow, pointed green leaves and in early Spring, lovely feathery, pale pink flowers on four-inch stems. A treasure for the peat bed or shaded trough.
Heucherella 'Sunspot' 9cm...£3.50
Hibiscus 'Red Heart' 9cm...£3.00
Horminum pyrenaicum 9cm ... £2.50
Very deep green, roughly crenate leaves in rosettes and forming strong clumps with strong six-inch stems carrying loose panicles of blue, white-lipped flowers. A moist spot in sun or part shade is ideal.
HIBBERTIA procumbens sold out
Another antipodean this with fine, spreading stems clothed in narrowly ovate leaves and quite large yellow flowers. Part shade and moisture retentive, gritty soil.
HUTCHINSIA alpina 9cm ... £2.25
Small, stiff lacy rosettes form a slow-growing dense, dark green mound and in summer, small flat corymbs of cream-white flowers. An admirable small apine for a slightly shaded position.
HYDRANGEA macrophylla 'Harry's Pink Topper 2ltr...£3.50
Large round, bright pink flowers make a fine show in June and July
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Madame Emile Mouillere' 2ltr...£3.50
A shade-loving selection with big white, green-tinged heads of flower in July/August.
HYDRANGEA quercifolia 2 ltr ... £3.50
An architectural species with white-felted young growth expanding into large, jagged-edged leaves and large pyramidal, cones of white flower-heads in late Summer.
HYMENANTHERA alpina 9cm ... £2.50
A small, congested and compact-growing shrub with thick, short stems and small rigid leaves. The flowers are small, yellow fine-rayed things and followed by small, transluscent berries.
Hymenanthera crassifolia 1 ltr ... £3.00
A larger version of the above, up to eighteen inches tall with a complex, intricate growth pattern and widely spread oblanceolate, green leaves. Insignificant flowers are followed by dramatic large white berries.
HYMENOXYS acaulis caespitosa 9cm ... £3.50
Quite large, hairy silver-grey rosettes slowly make a tight mound and carry large, many-rayed flowers in rich golden yellow. A really choice North American which is ideal for a sunny trough or raised bed or a deserving subject for the alpine house.
Hymenoxys grandiflora 9cm ... £3.00
'Old-Man-of-the-Mountain' Startlingly large, golden-yellow 'sunflowers' on six-inch stems over silvery hairy, divided leaves. Sun but not too parched.
Hymenoxys lappidicola 7cm...£3.00
Grown well, this forms a congested mound of matt green foliage on which sit large golden orange-yellow 'daisies'. Stunning and found on inaccessible sandstone cliffs in North America. In this country, it is surprisingly tolerant given airy conditions with sufficient moisture in Summer and kept just dry in Winter.
Hymenoxys torreyanum 7cm...£3.50
Hypericum aegypticum 9cm...£2.50
Hypericum athoum sold out
A small mound of pleasant soft stems of light green foliage and terminal egg-yolk yellow saucers. Moist semi-shade.

Excellent ground-cover for dwarf rhododenrons or suchlike, in a peatbed.
HYPOCHAERIS uniflora 2 ltr ... £2.50
A large rosette of three-inch spathulate green leaves and a stout, eight-inch tall stem holding aloft a large, almost square, fine-rayed rich yellow flower. Sun in good soil.
