Dense tufts of silver-grey leaves and small racemes of pale yellow flowers. From dry, gravelly ridges and like many of these North American forms, seems to require a good collar of grit to prevent any sitting moisture.

A robust and more easily grown member of the genus, originating from China and in time forms a multi-tufted crown of pinnate, silver hairy, blue-grey leaves and violet-purple flowers in spheres on felted, three-inch stems. Has proved long-lived and tough enough for a sheltered rock garden.
